Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College at Claflin University Turning Students Into Leaders Preparing the next generation of leaders is an awesome task, but one that Claflin University in Orangeburg has excelled in. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, this historically black university has been educating scholars since 1869. In 1994, Henry N. Tisdale became Claflin’s eighth president. During the first year of his presidency, Tisdale established an honors college targeting high-achieving students. He appointed his wife, Alice Carson Tisdale, to direct the honors college.
